Hello all,

I'm currently planning a film for this summer, and I'm a student. Now this film isn't related to my university studies. I want to set some of the film in a college, and they say that I will need Public Liability insurance.

I've contacted insurance brokers and they say that it is not likely that anyone will want to insure for this project (because of a potentially high risk), and that if they did then I would be paying a premium of at least ?1500-?2000 as a rough estimate.

    HELP!

Does anyone have any advice on what I can do here? I don't want something like this to ruin this project. It's hard enough trying to make a student film without any funding, let alone trying to raise a LOT of money on insurance.

My next step is to see if I can get my university to cover it, but they'll probably say no. If they say yes, then I'm restricted to students and can't get any other extras.

Making a movie seems less about filming and more about red tape.

Is there any oraganisation out there in the UK that helps with student films?

OK far be it for me to advise but...

In my pre-film school days, I wanted to shoot a DV short mostly on a train and in two train stations. To do this would have cost me a ludicrous amount. So rather than part with the cash...

I monitored times at the station to see when things were busy and when they were less so. I noted any official looking presence and tried to look touristy.

I made sure me and my crew got on the train first and thus had the pick of the seats. We sat at the back of the train partially seperated from everyone else. Barring slightly dodgy audio the whole thing was a success! And thats what you call Guerilla film making.

I'm not saying avoid insurance, but there is nearly always away around these things...

Yes, I understand what you are saying. Because I need permission to use this college, they insist I need insurance. But, if I don't get it, I'm still going to make the film even if it needs a little bit of a script rewrite.

Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

Did you consider any alternatives to a college, for instance a high school or something. You said you are planning on doing this in the summer. Then you essentially have the same classrooms, and gyms you have at a college, and you are free to set-dress to get that college look. Talk to a local superintendent and see if they have the same liability issues as the college. Just a thought.

    Hey there.

I got along with most of the teachers at my school. In fact Ive been on a few nights on the **** with them since leaving sixth form. One of them is a stand up comedian and has just turned to acting. I saw him at a friend of mines 21 birthday party the otherday and he wants to be in one of my movies.

    Despin out.
